It was during Stellantis' EV Day (July 8) that the 2022 Jeep Grand Cherokee 4xe was revealed. The first plug-in hybrid version of the popular SUV (now in its 5th generation!) has lived up to its reputation.
Contrary to popular opinion, it's not the iconic Wrangler that makes the Jeep brand. In fact, the Grand Cherokee is just as important to Jeep sales. While we love its unique combination of off-road capability and cutting-edge equipment, we're most impressed with its rugged, outdoorsy look.
Jeep will soon have two hybrid models, the Wrangler and the Grand Cherokee. And it sure looks like Jeep will be expanding its offering of electric models over the coming years.
For now, let's take a closer look at what's in store for the first-ever Jeep Grand Cherokee hybrid in 2022.
Jeep Grand Cherokee: The Arrival of the First Hybrid Model
First off, Jeep has respected the Grand Cherokee's signature design for the hybrid model. Although shorter than the Grand Cherokee L, it still has its famous seven-slot grille and its rugged looks.
There are many aesthetic innovations in the 2022 Grand Cherokee model year. Window surrounds, a contrasting roof colour and lower-bumper openings, all differing from the regular model, come to mind. Most importantly, Jeep is introducing a striking new two-row body style that combines innovation and design.
In terms of technical features, the 2022 Grand Cherokee offers customizable integrated connectivity. On top of that, an optional 10.1-inch display is available, all with advanced Uconnect 5 technology.
Engine, Transmission and Performance
The 2022 Grand Cherokee trims, the L and the 4xe, are both designed for off-road and on-road performance. Once again, Jeep balances power and legendary design as only it can do.
Three powertrains are offered: The 3.6-litre V-6, the 5.7-litre Hemi V-8, and the plug-in-hybrid 4xe. On top of that, several all-wheel-drive systems are available, including an electronically locking limited-slip differential. To top it off, both trims offer rear and all-wheel drive.
As for the in-dash technologies in these exceptional vehicles, the touchscreen is compatible with Apple CarPlay and Android Auto. As an option, the dashboard can give real-time traffic and weather updates.
While we're on the options, an impressive array of options can be built into each model. For example, you can trade the standard 6-speaker package for a 9-speaker Alpine audio system. And for audio enthusiasts, the top-of-the-line 19-speaker McIntosh system is also available.
Fuel Economy and MPG
The fuel economy of the 2022 Grand Cherokee is typical of SUVs in the same class. We're talking 19 MPG city and 26 MPG highway using rear-wheel drive.
Using all-wheel drive drops these estimates by 1 MPG. So, the V-8 model is rated 14 MPG city and 22 MPG highway.
For the 2022 Grand Cherokee hybrid model, the estimated range is 40 km in EV driving mode. In hybrid mode, the estimated range is 708 km.
Interior Features
The interior of the 2022 Grand Cherokee has been updated to integrate the innovations of this new generation. Luxury appointments, rich colours and the latest technology complete the SUV's cabin.
