The most commonly manufactured hybrid cars are electric cars that use small internal combustion engines and an electric generator. Increased fuel efficiency and reduced pollution levels are the most significant advantages of hybrid electric vehicles (HEVs). In contrast to purely electric cars, HEVs don't have restrictions imposed by the infamous limited driving range (and resulting range anxiety) between charges. HEVs may seem like a relatively recent development, but auto manufacturers have been designing and building hybrid vehicles since the industry began.
The release of the Prius, which has become synonymous with the automotive term "hybrid," in the United States in 2000 turned HEV into a household term. The Prius is still the most popular HEV ever produced.
Today, hybrid vehicles and electric cars in Canada in 2021 are becoming more available. Many manufacturers offer a hybrid version of at least one of their models. The hybrid models we'll focus on here are the Jeep Wrangler 4xe and the Chrysler Pacifica Hybrid.
The Jeep Wrangler Unlimited 4xe
The Jeep Wrangler Unlimited 4xe offers the same iconic look and power as the standard 2021 Jeep Wrangler with a reduced carbon footprint. This vehicle comes outfitted with a turbocharged 2.0-liter four-cylinder engine paired with two electric motors. As a result, drivers get a combined 375 horsepower, eight-speed automatic transmission, two available four-wheel-drive systems, and a 17.3-kilowatt-hour battery with an estimated 40km of electric-only driving range.
A hybridized transmission replaces the torque converter in the standard eight-speed automatic with a new dual-clutch setup and built-in electric motor. This technology enables it to run in a nearly silent full EV mode, full gasoline mode, or full hybrid mode depending on conditions, battery charge, and the driver's manual selections.
The hybrid combination can take the Jeep Wrangler Unlimited 4xe from zero to 100 km h in six seconds. Additionally, the vehicle's overall range is about 630 km on combined gas and electricity.
The Chrysler Pacifica Hybrid
The 2021 Chrysler Pacifica Hybrid was the highest-ranked plug-in hybrid on Edmunds list for 2021 and 2022 vehicles. While it's more stylish than your average minivan, it also comes equipped with an abundance of safety features like a rear camera and parking sensors. In addition to seating seven people comfortably, the Pacifica is fully stocked with convenient and luxurious features. Comfortable contoured seating, three-zone climate control, and an easy-to-use audio and navigation system with an 8.4-inch touch screen, smartphone integration, and voice controls are only some of the Chrysler Pacifica Hybrid's standard offerings.
Engine-wise, this vehicle comes with a 3.6-liter V-6 engine, augmented with two electric motors for a total of 260 horsepower. The Chrysler Pacifica Hybrid can travel for 53 km on exclusively electric power, and the 16 kWh battery recharges fully in two hours with a 240-volt power supply.
Hybrid and Electric Cars Incoming
According to Stellantis CEO Carlos Tavares, by the end of 2022, all of Jeep's models are expected to have a hybrid equivalent. By mid-decade, a fully electrified option will be available in each category. Additionally, Stellantis is excited to integrate electric motors into high-performance vehicles like Dodge and Ram. The goal is for electrified vehicles to represent at least 40% of sales by the year 2030.
The plan for Dodge is a 100% electric muscle car in 2024 with potentially unprecedented zero to 100 km acceleration. Ram has announced an electric ProMaster van and an electric Ram 1500, the latter arriving in 2024.
Differences Between Home Charging and EV Charging Stations
Ideally, every electric car owner has a 240-volt charger at home, along with the necessary Level 2 charging equipment. These elements would allow you to plug in and charge at the end of each day and begin each new day with a full charge. However, we all know this isn't the case; apartments or condos often don't have dedicated parking or a place to install EV charging upgrades.
While Level 2 charging adds approximately 40 km of range each hour, EVs can charge using standard 120-volt wall outlets, which are abundant. Charging in this way adds only about 6.5 km of range each hour, but it doesn't require any special equipment - only what comes with the car.
Public chargers are typically Level 2, but an increasing number are now offering fast charging - often called Level 3 - which can add from 80 to 240 km in 30 minutes. It's important to note that some EVs don't come equipped for Level 3 charging, and charging time varies.
